This book chronicles ten years of travel by Shinobu Okumura in search of everyday objects still used by ethnic minority communities in remote parts of China. The expanded edition adds a new chapter documenting his return to Yunnan and Guizhou after the pandemic, following the resumption of sourcing trips in 2024.

Okumura runs the lifestyle craft shop Mingei Okumura and follows the spirit of the Mingei movement associated with Soetsu Yanagi. For him, handcraft includes not only ceramics, textiles and basketry, but also terraced fields, Chinese tea, regional cuisine, architecture and everyday customs. The book explores local life and traditions in Yunnan and Guizhou, with memorable accounts of rural food culture. Photographer Yayoi Arimoto accompanied Okumura and captures the vivid colors of the region. The expanded edition also provides a valuable record of changes before and after the pandemic.
