Traditional Japanese beauty expressed in an adorable form
Shigeru Uchida Washi Lamp Paper Moon PM01
Shigeru Uchida was active both in Japan and abroad, engaged in a wide range of fields including commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development.
Shigeru Uchida, who introduced traditional Japanese beauty to the world, exhibited his foldable tea houses "Ju-an," "So-an," and "Gyo-an" (announced in the 90s) in a touring exhibition at European museums. Uchida's product designs, born from the perspective of an interior designer, always sought the essence of traditional Japanese beauty, while also keeping an eye on the trends of the times.
The Paper Moon lighting series is one such example, utilizing the techniques of "Gifu Lanterns," a specialty product of Gifu that has continued since the Edo period and was designated a "Traditional Craft" by the nation in 1995. Gifu lanterns are handmade by skilled artisans using thin, high-quality Mino Washi paper from the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture and bamboo nurtured by Gifu's rich nature. The Paper Moon, created with this technique, is a charming table/floor lamp with an adorable, soft form.
Everyone will surely feel a sense of familiarity with its unpretentious, natural form and the gentle light diffused through the washi paper. Its humorous forms, reminiscent of "mochi" (rice cakes), "takenoko" (bamboo shoots), or "hyotan" (gourds), and the texture of the washi paper are extremely "Japanese," yet they blend seamlessly into any space, whether Japanese or Western.
