Traditional Japanese beauty expressed in an adorable form
Shigeru Uchida Washi Lamp Paper Moon PM03
Shigeru Uchida has been involved in a wide range of activities both in Japan and internationally, including commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development.
In the 1990s, he presented his foldable tea houses "Ju-an, So-an, and Gyo-an" in a traveling exhibition at museums in Europe, introducing traditional Japanese beauty to the world. Uchida's product designs, created from the perspective of an interior designer, always had traditional Japanese beauty at their core, pursuing its essence while also keeping an eye on the trends of the times.
The Paper Moon lighting series is one such example, utilizing the techniques of "Gifu Lanterns," a special product of Gifu that has continued since the Edo period and was designated as a "Traditional Craft Product" by the government in 1995. Gifu Lanterns are made by skilled artisans using thin, high-quality Mino washi paper from the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture and bamboo nurtured by Gifu's rich nature. Paper Moon, created using these techniques, is an attractive table lamp/floor lamp with a lovely, soft form.
The natural, unpretentious forms and the gentle light diffused through the washi paper are sure to evoke a sense of familiarity in everyone. The humorous forms reminiscent of "mochi," "bamboo shoots," and "gourds," as well as the texture of the washi paper, are extremely "Japanese," yet they blend seamlessly into any space, whether Japanese or Western.
