The ten works curated in this collection span the Asuka, Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods of Japanese Buddhist art, with each subject designated as either a National Treasure or an Important Cultural Property of Japan. As a master who dedicated his life to documenting the statues of Nara, Kozo Ogawa of Asuka-en possessed a profound understanding of how to use large-format photography and the subtle interplay of light and shadow to capture the textures that centuries of time have etched onto wood and clay. Through his monochrome lens, the fine fissures in the statues, the flaking of the gold leaf, and the fluid drapery of the robes are rendered in exquisite, magnified detail. Furthermore, the high-precision printing by Hirai Shinbikan perfectly reproduces the tonal range and grain of these black-and-white photographs, stripping away the sterile feel of commercial publications and elevating each image into an independent work of photographic art, worthy of being framed and displayed.
