In the field of architecture, Tong Jun is recognized as one of the “Four Masters of Modern Chinese Architecture,” alongside Liu Dunzhen, Liang Sicheng, and Yang Tingbao. Born in 1900, he studied at Tsinghua School alongside Liang Sicheng, and later, during their studies at the University of Pennsylvania, they shared a dormitory once again. Liang Sicheng once praised Tong, remarking that his architectural expertise “exceeded mine tenfold.”
This book, written by Tong Jun, is a seminal study of classical gardens in the Jiangnan region of China. More than just an architectural treatise, it is an artistic work imbued with the author’s deep affection for Jiangnan’s garden heritage.
