Kadoya is located in Shimabara, which was Kyoto's only officially recognized red light district during the Edo period. What is called ``ageya'' is not only a restaurant, but also a luxurious place that offers everything from food and drink to various entertainment. The people who visit here are wealthy, often from court aristocrats and samurai families. To satisfy these prestigious customers, Kadoya was extremely luxurious, both inside and out, possessing "the best of the time." Although it has all the elegant spaces that we are familiar with, such as the Japanese garden and tea room, it is completely different from the usual elegant Japanese aesthetics, and here there is an atmosphere of depravity. If temples and tea rooms represent the A side of Kyoto, Kadoya represents the B side of Kyoto, which is full of lust and customs and seduces people.
