It is not the famous sightseeing spots, nor places meant for tourists, but the places locals really frequent that hold an interest unique to that place.
This book is a guide to Kyoto with a difference from ordinary guidebooks, in which 26 contributors living in Kyoto — differing in profession, position and age — and the editorial team of Kyoto-kan (the City of Kyoto's official website) introduce favourite places and things they actually frequent.
All kinds of eateries — coffee houses, cafés, bars, izakaya, Italian restaurants, Chinese restaurants and more — specialty shops such as dried-goods shops, tofu shops, wine shops and chopstick shops, recommended products from long-established staples to hidden gems, events and happenings such as the Gion Festival, the Gozan Okuribi, the Mitarashi Festival and antique markets, and even everyday scenes such as the banks of the Kamo River, Mount Daimonji and Kyoto City Buses.
"Places", "things" and "happenings", freely chosen from the perspective of people who live in Kyoto, are lined up.
The book is divided into chapters by ward — Nakagyo, Higashiyama, Kamigyo, Sakyo and so on — so you can also tour the spots within the same chapter.
Scanning the QR code on the opening page gives you a Google Map with every place in the book marked, so using the book and Google Maps together makes it even more practical. At the back of the book there is also a list of individual QR codes for each place, so use whichever method suits you.
At the same time, as a basic rule the inner pages introduce each topic with a single photograph, so you can also enjoy it without any practical purpose, flipping through and browsing it like a photobook.
A book recommended for those who want to experience an unknown side of Kyoto and its local culture and life.
