Traditional Japanese beauty expressed in adorable forms Shigeru Uchida Washi Lighting Paper Moon 02
He is active in a wide range of fields both domestically and internationally, including commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development.
Shigeru Uchida introduced traditional Japanese beauty to the world through traveling exhibitions of his folding teahouses, "Juan, Soan, Gyoan," which he unveiled in the 1990s, at art museums in Europe.
Uchida's product designs, created from the perspective of an interior designer, always have a foundation in traditional Japanese beauty, pursuing its essence while keeping in mind the trends of the times.
One of these is the Paper Moon lighting series, which utilizes the techniques of Gifu lanterns, a specialty of Gifu that has been around since the Edo period and was designated as a national "traditional craft" in 1995.
Gifu lanterns are handcrafted by skilled craftsmen using thin, high-quality Mino washi paper from the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture and bamboo grown in Gifu's rich natural environment.
Paper Moon, created using this technology, is an attractive table lamp/floor lamp with an adorable, soft form.
Anyone can relate to the simple, natural form and the gentle light shining through the washi paper.
The humorous form reminiscent of mochi, bamboo shoots, and gourds, and the texture of the washi paper are extremely Japanese, yet they also blend in well with any space, whether Japanese or Western.
The PM02 has an appealing, humorous gourd-like shape and is a lamp that can also be used as an accent in any space.
