During his university days, Koichi Saito worked as an assistant to the famous photographer Tadahiko Hayashi. In 1965, he participated in the first Japan-China Youth Exchange as part of the Japan Photographers Association, and since then, he seems to have found some kind of connection with China, and since then he has visited and reported on various parts of China over 80 times. His lens captures the period in cities such as Suzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. This collection of photographs, taken in Beijing between 1995 and 1996, captures the ever-changing pulse of the city beneath its quiet surface. When we flip through a photo book, we get the illusion that the various people on the street corners are still part of our lives, but in reality they are memories of a time that has long since passed away.
