As a photojournalist, Ken Domon’s lens captured the essence of turbulent times, documenting the joys and sorrows of lives swept up by the era—whether celebrities, common folk, adults, or children.
He is particularly renowned for his photography of Japanese temples. Despite suffering two strokes that left him partially paralyzed and unable to use his right hand to press the shutter, Domon persisted in visiting and photographing temples, relying on his left hand to operate a shutter release cable. His dedication continued until a third stroke plunged him into an 11-year coma.
Domon’s personal experience of fate became one with the subjects he captured, which explains his ability to convey the serene and compassionate nature of Buddhist statues.
This set of six volumes compiles the main works of Ken Domon across various themes.
