Saul Leiter (1923-2013) took photographs and painted every day until shortly before his death at the age of 89, leaving behind a vast body of work. His source of inspiration was just a few blocks from his apartment on East 10th Street in Manhattan, and his worldview, capturing the city of New York in color, is a genius for finding beauty in ordinary places, and it has garnered widespread attention today.
On the other hand, his work as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in the 1960s and 1970s, his black and white landscapes, his "intimate portraits" of nudes, and his painted nude photographs were largely hidden from the public during his lifetime.
This book, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Leiter's birth, is a definitive collection of Saul Leiter's works that draws on the vast archives managed by the Saul Leiter Foundation to explore the diversity of his expression, the source of his experimental work, and his entire life, making full use of valuable materials such as unpublished works, contact sheets, and a photographic chronology tracing his life.
