Born from the richly decorative culture and environment of the Momoyama period, Oribe ware is characterized by its bold, unique designs that exude an unmistakable vitality. This volume is based on the seminal work Oribe no Moyō, edited by Kato Takuo and first published in 1985 by Mitsumura Suiko Shoin. The original was compiled from ceramic fragments unearthed at ancient kiln sites scattered across the Mino region. However, the book has long been out of print and is now difficult to find even in antiquarian circles—a regrettable reality given its historical value.
This newly revised and accessible edition supplements the original content with over one hundred additional examples and includes a new scholarly essay that explores the positioning of Oribe ware as tableware. Through these expanded materials, the book offers a deeper understanding of the true nature of Oribe. Though it cannot fully replace the physical experience of the actual ceramics, the reader is invited to sense the allure of Oribe through its unrestrained forms, earthy textures, and richly expressive decorative motifs.
