Hashima, the coal-mining island that supported Japan's rapid economic growth. This black-and-white photography book records the former life of the island, called "Gunkanjima" (Battleship Island) because of its concrete sea walls and the smoke billowing from its chimneys. The photographs, which only Takashi Minagawa, who actually lived on the island in the 1955–1964 period, could have taken, convey the vitality of islanders who led bright, rich lives despite harsh labour. A book in which the author, now 75, has gathered for the first time photographs taken some 50 years ago. It is also valuable as a record of Gunkanjima and as material on Showa-era life and customs.
