Hashima, an island of coal mines that supported Japan's rapid economic growth. This nostalgic yet powerful monochrome photo collection captures the "true appearance" of the island, which was nicknamed Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) due to its concrete seawall and the smoke billowing from its chimneys. The photographs, taken by the author who lived on the island in the 1950s, convey the vibrant spirit of the islanders who, despite their arduous labor, lived bright and fulfilling lives. This is a heartfelt collection of photographs from 50 years ago, compiled for the first time by the 75-year-old author. It is a valuable book as a record of Gunkanjima and as a document of customs from the Showa era.
