Known as "Nyonin Koya" (Women's Koya), Muroji Temple is located in the mountains of northeastern Nara Prefecture. Ken Domon first visited this temple in 1939 (Showa 14) and was utterly captivated by the graceful pagodas and towers nestled in the mountain gorge, as well as the wooden Buddhist statues from the early Heian period. He particularly praised the seated Shaka Nyorai statue, declaring, "There is no other Buddhist statue in the world with such an intelligent and handsome face." Even during the war and the resource-scarce period shortly after, he carried equipment and rice on his back to continue photographing at the temple. Muroji was a place that never ceased to fuel Domon's passion for photography, as he felt he could never capture it fully and was always inspired to take more pictures. This book includes his masterful monochrome photographs taken from before the war until 1977 (Showa 52), snapshots from the shooting process, and essays brimming with his love for Muroji Temple.
