Bernard Leach (1887-1979) was born in Hong Kong, and his pottery began in Japan and paved the way for modern British ceramics. He was fascinated by Raku-yaki in Japan and studied under Kenzan Ogata VI to learn the techniques of Raku-yaki. In the 1930s, Leach began creating practical everyday tableware. This was also the time when Soetsu Yanagi conveyed the ideas of the Mingei movement to Leach. After the war, pottery makers, tired of the humble tableware of the war era, sought out Leach's brightly colored tableware. The exhibition is a product of East-West collaboration, featuring 177 paintings, engravings and ceramic works from British and Japanese collections, reflecting on the role the ceramist played as a bridge between East and West.
