Lucie Rie (1902–1995), a British potter representative of the 20th century. Born in Vienna, Austria, she was captivated by throwing on the wheel at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and took up the path of ceramics. She continued working after moving to London in 1938, and is known for her elegant forms, original patterns made by inlay and sgraffito, and the rich colours produced by her glazes.
This exhibition is her first retrospective in Japan in about ten years. Presenting also works by Josef Hoffmann, whom she met in her Vienna years, and by Bernard Leach and Hans Coper, with whom she associated in her London years, it re-examines her relationship with the ceramics of the East, centred on Japan. Through works from her early period to her mature period, it explores the sources of her forms and the convictions of the artist.
