Born amid the history and culture of the gorgeous Momoyama period, Oribe ware is characterised by uniquely innovative designs, and an overwhelming vitality can be felt in its forms. This book is based on Oribe no Monyo (Oribe Patterns, 1985, Mitsumura Suiko Shoin), the celebrated work edited by Takuo Kato and compiled from sherds excavated at old kiln sites scattered across the Mino region. Sadly, however, that book is now out of print and remains difficult to obtain even secondhand.
In addition to the patterns in the original edition, this book adds over a hundred new items and includes a recent essay discussing how Oribe ware should be positioned as tableware, bringing it closer to the truth of Oribe. It has also been re-edited and published as a popular edition so that it can reach a wide readership. Even if you cannot hold the actual pieces, you will be able to fully feel the appeal of Oribe ware in its free, rich forms and patterns that carry the scent of earth.
