Saul Leiter (1923–2013) took photographs and painted every day until shortly before his death at 89, leaving behind an enormous body of work. His sources of inspiration lay within just a few blocks of his apartment on East 10th Street in Manhattan, and as a genius at finding beauty in ordinary places, his vision of the streets of New York captured in colour attracts wide attention today.
On the other hand, his work as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in the 1960s and 70s, his black-and-white scenes, his "intimate portrait" nudes and his painted-over nude photographs were hardly ever shown during his lifetime.
Marking the centenary of Leiter's birth, this book is the definitive collection that, drawing on the vast archive managed by the Saul Leiter Foundation and making full use of valuable materials such as unpublished works, contact sheets and an illustrated chronology tracing his life, gets to the whole picture of the diversity of Saul Leiter's expression and the sources of his experimentation.
