Saul Leiter (1923–2013) continued to photograph and paint almost every day until late in life, leaving behind an extensive body of work. His inspiration often came from the few blocks around his home on East 10th Street in Manhattan. With a remarkable eye for beauty in ordinary places, he developed a poetic vision of New York through color photography.
Much of his work remained little known during his lifetime, including fashion photographs for Harper’s Bazaar in the 1960s and 1970s, black-and-white street scenes, intimate portraits and painted nude photographs. Published for the centenary of his birth, this definitive monograph draws on the Saul Leiter Foundation archive and includes unpublished photographs, contact sheets and an illustrated chronology of his life.
