Shigeru Uchida Paper Moon PM01: Japanese Washi Light

Japanese traditional beauty expressed through a charming, gentle form.

Shigeru Uchida — Paper Moon washi paper light, model PM01

Shigeru Uchida worked broadly in commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development in Japan and internationally.

In the 1990s, Uchida presented Japanese traditional aesthetics internationally through museum exhibitions featuring his foldable tea rooms, Ju-an, So-an, and Gyo-an. His product designs, developed from the perspective of an interior designer, responded to the character of each era while remaining rooted in Japanese tradition and seeking its essential qualities.

The Paper Moon lighting series draws on the traditional craft of Gifu lanterns, a local specialty dating back to the Edo period and designated a traditional Japanese craft in 1995. Skilled artisans make these lanterns by hand using fine, lightweight Mino washi paper and bamboo grown in Gifu. Paper Moon translates this technique into a charming table or floor light with a soft, organic silhouette.

Its natural, unforced form and gentle light filtered through washi feel familiar and welcoming. The playful shape may suggest mochi, a bamboo shoot, or a gourd. Both the form and paper texture are distinctly Japanese, yet sit comfortably in a wide range of interiors, whether Western or Japanese in style.
