Renowned painter Yoshitomo Nara has continued to take photographs alongside his artwork. This book carefully selects and compiles approximately 300 photographs taken over the past 20 years since 1983, unbound by place or time. From glimpses of his studios in Japan and Germany, offering insight into his creative process, to photos taken in Afghanistan and scenes of daily life in Tokyo, this volume allows you to fully immerse yourself in Nara’s world.
I’ve often been asked about publishing a photo collection, and it took a long time to organize my past work. These photos weren’t originally taken with publication in mind, so many older negatives were lost, and the prints weren’t always suitable for publishing, making the book’s compilation quite challenging. Ultimately, this book is composed of photos from 1983 to the present, most of which were taken spontaneously. Looking at them now, gathered together, it’s fascinating to see how they seem to reflect my state of mind at the time. (Yoshitomo Nara)
