A scholarly examination of the 52 wooden Bodhisattva statues (National Treasures) adorning Byodo-in's Phoenix Hall. Created in 1053 by the Jocho workshop, these dynamic sculptures depict celestial beings playing music amidst clouds to praise Amida Buddha. Art historian Mitsuharu Iwasa deciphers their polychrome techniques, sculptural beauty, and religious significance within Heian-period Buddhist culture.
