This book is a specialist volume focusing on the Unchu Kuyo Bosatsu (Bodhisattvas on Clouds) enshrined in the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin. The 52 wooden bodhisattva statues made in 1053 by Jocho's workshop are hung above the nageshi beams of the Phoenix Hall, symbolising a vision of the Pure Land in which they ride on clouds, play instruments and dance in praise of Amida Buddha. The author, Mitsuharu Iwasa, combines the perspectives of archaeology and art history to explain in depth, in an accessible style, the formal beauty and painting techniques of these statues and the Buddhist cultural background of the Heian period.
