In the world of architecture, Tong Jun is known, together with Liu Dunzhen, Liang Sicheng and Yang Tingbao, as one of the "Four Masters of Modern Chinese Architecture." Born in 1900, he studied with Liang Sicheng at Tsinghua College, and later, when they studied at the University of Pennsylvania, they again lived in the same dormitory. Liang Sicheng once praised him, saying, "Tong Jun's ability is ten times mine."
This book is Tong Jun's definitive study of the classical gardens of the Jiangnan region. More than just a book on architecture, it is also a work of art imbued with the author's deep love of Jiangnan gardens.
