From the 6th century onwards, with the introduction of Buddhism, the Japanese became aware of the art of fragrance and created a culture of fragrance that is rare in the world. This book is divided into three themes: “Japanese fragrance culture, incense ceremony and incense implements, and incense in paintings.” It shows the exchange between Japanese people and fragrance from ancient times to the present through famous treasures, and introduces the world that has developed uniquely since the Muromachi period along with incense, tea ceremony, and flower arrangement, with a particular focus on incense utensils and materials. Lastly, ``The Scent of Paintings'' will display paintings from the Edo period to the present day, featuring classic works with scent as the theme.
