Fresco: Decorative and Graphic Fantasy Structures

Published in 1982 by the renowned Italian art publisher Belvedere, Fresco is a catalogue of imaginative contemporary decorative and graphic design. Compiled by Wolfgang Hageney, a master of design publishing, the book set out to break away from micro-level imitation of traditional decorative motifs and to reinterpret space and visual surfaces through a macro, avant-garde "language of figure and form."

The "Fresco" of the title does not refer to classical religious murals but is a metaphor: each page of the book is treated as a "contemporary wall" for free expression. Throughout, it contains many experimental works full of fantastical structures, in which planes of colour, graphic structures, type feeling and printed textures are superbly fused, building a distinctive contemporary system of visual signs.
