This book was written by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, who explores in it the design and construction of Katsura Imperial Villa and its relationship with the natural environment. Tange argues that Katsura is a unique example of Japanese architecture that embodies elements of both tradition and innovation. He also touches on Katsura's influence on modern architecture, discussing in particular its influence on the work of Western architects such as Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. The book also contains photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto, who is famous for his black-and-white photographs of Japanese architecture. His photographs capture the beauty and tranquillity of Katsura.
