As a photojournalist, Ken Domon's lens captured the face of a turbulent era. Whether celebrities or ordinary people, adults or children, he recorded the joys and sorrows of lives buffeted by the times.
Particularly notable is his photography of Japanese temples. Domon suffered two strokes that left him partially paralysed, and even after he could no longer press the shutter with his right hand, he operated a shutter remote with his left and continued travelling to temples to photograph them. He kept up that passion until a third stroke left him in a coma for 11 years.
Domon's own bodily experience of fate and the subjects his lens captured ultimately became one; no wonder he was always able to express the serenity and compassion of Buddhist statues.
This six-volume set is a record collecting Domon's major works on each of his themes.
