Until the age of 18, Ma Hailun was born and raised in Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. At 18 she moved to New York and studied photography at the School of Visual Arts. Brooklyn gathers people from all over the world and blends rich cultures, and Xinjiang, a corridor linking Europe and Asia, likewise nurtures diverse and symbiotic ways of life. Anchored in her hometown of Xinjiang, she launched the project Uruklyn (a clever combination of Urumqi and Brooklyn), documenting her hometown through fashion photography.
