This work compiles photographs taken by Japanese photographer Tokuko Ushioda between 1978 and 1983, documenting her family life with her husband, photographer Shinzo Shimao, and their daughter Maho in a single room of a historic Western-style house in Tokyo’s Gotokuji. The images capture the lively daily life of the trio as well as solitary moments at night, conveying an atmosphere where intimacy and tranquility coexist.
The book is divided into two volumes: Book 1 features square black-and-white photographs shot with a 6×6 medium-format camera, while Book 2 contains 35mm film snapshots, showcasing different perspectives and textures. Rediscovered after lying dormant for about 40 years, these photographs were organized and published in 2020, earning the Jury Special Award at the 2022 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards.
