Bernard Leach (1887–1979) was a potter who was born in Hong Kong, studied pottery in Japan and had a great influence on the development of modern British ceramics. Captivated by raku ware in Japan, he studied its techniques under the sixth-generation Ogata Kenzan. In the 1930s he worked on making practical everyday tableware and was also influenced by the ideas of Soetsu Yanagi's mingei movement. This exhibition catalogue contains 177 works, including paintings, prints and ceramics selected from British and Japanese collections, looking back on Leach's activities linking the crafts of East and West.
