This precious album of drawings, elaborately reproduced by the Museum of Modern Japanese Literature, was published in 1891 and is the most evocative representative work of Georges Bigot, the renowned French caricaturist and printmaker. Bigot, who stayed in Japan for 17 years during the Meiji period, was known for his biting political cartoons, yet he also recorded the landscape and people's lives of Japan at the time in extremely gentle, flowing line drawings. Through a series of drawings and etchings, the book delicately captures a day in the life of a Tokyo geisha. Her daily routine, from waking in the early morning, dressing and making up, and practising the shamisen, to going to banquets lit by lanterns and returning home late at night, is superbly depicted.
