Written by Kazuko Koizumi, a renowned Japanese historian of daily life, this book is an indispensable classic (illustrated reference) for studying and appreciating traditional Japanese furniture. Breaking out of the catalogue-style documentation typical of books on objects, the author brings "furniture" back into the "scenes of daily life" of the Japanese. From Edo-period clothing chests, account chests and wheeled chests to the hibachi braziers, tea shelves and folding screens essential to everyday life, the book contains many valuable photographs of actual pieces and illustrations from historical documents, analysing in depth how Japanese furniture evolved with changes in house construction and ways of life.
