This book is the official catalogue of a celebrated touring exhibition jointly organised by the Mori Art Museum in Japan and The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), and gets to the heart of the concept of "Modern." From the artistic revolutions of the late 19th century to the expansion of creativity up to the present, it examines from many angles, with continuity and change as its axis, how modern art was formed and has continued to evolve.
The exhibition opened at the Mori Art Museum in 2004, presenting a careful selection of MoMA's masterpieces. Paintings, sculptures and installations by masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol stand side by side, suggesting that "modern" is not merely a style but a mirror of the spirit of the age itself.
Centred on high-definition colour plates and scholarly commentary, the catalogue is arranged chronologically from Impressionism through Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to contemporary installation. It also includes an essay by the German curator David Elliott, delving deeply into how MoMA has defined "modern" and shaped the history of modern and contemporary art worldwide.
