Yoshitomo Nara, a leading Japanese artist known for his remarkable work, has chosen “clay = ceramics” as a new form of creation.
In 2007, Nara visited Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, as an artist-in-residence, and over approximately three years, he created ceramic works that were unveiled in May this year at Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, leaving viewers in awe and deeply moved. The collection includes monumental 3-meter sculptures, girls with Buddha-like expressions held in the palm, and traditionally crafted pots and plates painted using a potter’s wheel, totaling 161 pieces to date.
Centered around installation photographs by longtime acquaintance photographer Mie Morimoto, this book weaves together Yoshitomo Nara’s new artistic world, making it a fitting volume to understand the current state of this passionate artist.
The large-format 300mm collection captivates with its intricate details. A complete list of works to date is included at the end of the book.
